2008 is the Year of the Rat. Which animal year were you born in?
Year of the Rabbit.
So here is a little update on what's going on with us here in Alaska.
~ The weather has been funny the past month - it's either really cold or really snowing. We've gotten more than our fair share of snow this winter and we even thought that we weren't going to have a white Christmas!
~ Thanks to our cable company up here switching to digital television (the entire country will be digital by February 2009) and forcing people to pay for digital tuners after the first three months (even though our HDTV had a digital tuner built in) we've signed up for Direct TV. As did so many other cable customers up here - we won't have it hooked up until the end of February!! Which means we have to find someplace else to watch the Superbowl.
~ In the meantime I've signed up for Netflix, which I am enjoying. :)
~ Thanks to a friend from work, I've now watched the first season of Heroes, and I love it.
~ Brent and I are hoping to have a baby this year.
~ We'll soon be purchasing our plane tickets to Sudbury and Connecticut for this summer. I'm really looking forward to seeing my family and friends back home and to seeing Brent's family in Connecticut and hopefully hooking up with Crystal and Joe for a little visit.
~ The new laminate flooring in the spare bedroom is almost finished. I can't wait to decorate the room!
~ I'm going to start scrapbooking - we'll see how that turns out!
How are you spending Christmas Day?
Sleeping in, then just relaxing most of the day before heading over to the in-laws for dinner.
Hope everyone has a safe and happy holiday! :)
I am done Christmas shopping - for family that is. All we have to do now is mail it all out within the next day or two (as well as all the Christmas cards I finished writing out over a week ago). I just have Brent left to shop for and that should be fairly easy. :)
We went over to Brent's mother's place for Thanksgiving dinner. We brought our Wii with us for some family fun. We talked, ate lots of food then we played Golf (we all need to practice that one a bit more hehe).
The weather for the past couple of days has been really (and I mean REALLY) mild. I thought our snow was going to stay for the rest of the winter but most of our snow has melted and we have green grass again. It's going to be a really sad day if I see a green Christmas in ALASKA!
And I have to work today... Black Friday. At least it's a closing shift so hopefully it won't be too bad.
In the three years that I've been working at our store we've never had any big name celebrities stop by. Not really a surprise since we ARE in Alaska. Only today someone famous did stop by the store... and I missed it!!
So there I am in the kid's department helping a customer when she finally asks:
"Was that really Steven Tyler in the store?"
Me: "What?"
Customer: "Steven Tyler from Aerosmith, he was in the store!"
Me: "Seriously?"
Customer: "Yeah he waved to us on his way out!"
Me: "Really? Steven Tyler?"
A couple of my lucky co-workers waited on him. They said he was really nice and he even signed a CD for one of them. And I totally missed it since I was elsewhere in the store. *sigh*
Apparently he was seen around town all weekend long. Maybe he'll stop back in someday.
It was a little late. We usually get snow sometime in October. But I'm not complaining... we had a nice long fall. All our Christmas displays are up at work and I see all the Christmas stuff on display when we are out shopping. I know what gifts I'll be getting for most of my family. It's hard to believe that I'll be leaving my grandmother off that list this year. I did buy a new ornament (what I would have bought for her) to put on my own tree this year. I need to find a nice wreath too for our front door. Costco has some nice ones that I have my eye on.
The waning daylight hours are already having an effect on me. I find myself sleeping in a little later (because the sun rises later). The sun is also setting sooner too. We were out shopping today and when leaving the store around 3 pm I noticed it was already slowly getting darker out. Ah well. Hopefully December 22nd will come soon enough and the days will start getting longer again.
Getting sick, that is. It took almost 3 weeks to get over that nasty cold I had at the beginning of the month. Then on Sunday I woke up to sore stomach. A few hours later I was sitting in front of the toilet. Couldn't keep anything down. *sigh* I got worse as the day wore on. By evening I ached all over. I basically spent the entire day upstairs in bed. I had a little portable heater in the bedroom cranked up and I was under my down-filled duvet. I should have been toasty warm but I was absolutely freezing. I didn't have anything to eat until Monday night when Brent made me some soup. My stomach is still a little sore today but I feel so much better than Sunday.
So I've now had a nasty cold and a nasty flu. Maybe that means I won't get sick for the rest of the winter? One can hope!
A year ago I was home visiting my family and getting stuffed on Thanksgiving dinner (two of them). My trip was ten days long but when you take out the flying "to" and "from" my time home was basically eight days. Those days went by too quickly. I wish I had more time to visit. I didn't know that would have been my last big dinner with my grandmother.
Today I am making a small turkey dinner for Brent and myself. Our friend Raey will be over for dinner too.
I guess I should get started...
